Frequently Asked Questions
Windshield Repair & Replacement
Windshield replacement has gotten more technical as car technology has advanced. Gone are the days of simply replacing a piece of glass. As vehicles become more and more high-tech, maintenance becomes more intricate. Of course, as technology advances, so does the expertise of technicians and mechanics. There is no need to stress. That said, do you know what it means to calibrate your new windshield?
What is Windshield Calibration?
The calibration process is important as it ensures your windshield is working properly. The process adjusts and tests all of the cameras and sensors on the windshield. If not working properly, this can lead to an accident because the Advance Driver Assistance System (ADAS) is not functioning at full capacity. Learn more about ADAS windshield calibration here.
When Do You Need a Windshield Calibration?
A windshield calibration can take place during any scheduled windshield replacement or repair. However, a sensor can be disturbed in instances as minor as a small collision or fender bender. In these cases, the windshield may remain unscathed, which is not necessarily a cry for calibration. We are here to tell you it is. After any accident – no matter how small, it is vital to schedule a consultation to ensure the windshield and ADAS are functioning properly. A windshield camera calibration can take anywhere from 30 to 45 minutes and is the best way to ensure you are as safe as you can be behind the wheel.

The damage to your windshield may be obvious. However, whether the damage means you need a windshield replacement or repair may not be. To avoid being scammed into a replacement when all you need is a repair, it is important to understand what constitutes either option.
First of all, a scammer might tell you that your windshield needs a replacement or repair when there is no visible damage. We assure you, damage to a windshield should be visible. Your only question should be whether or not you need a whole new windshield or if the chip can be filled.
The difference between a repair and replacement has everything to do with the size or magnitude of the damage.
· If the crack is longer than a dollar bill, you need a replacement.
· Is the crack or chip deep enough that it has penetrated more than halfway through the glass? If so, you’ll need a replacement.
· Is the crack or chip near or at the outside edge of the windshield? If so, you need a replacement.
· Is the damage in the driver’s line of sight? If so, your windshield needs to be replaced.
To avoid being scammed, you can do some due diligence. The key is to know what to ask and what to look for. When speaking to a technician or repair shop, look for an affiliation with the Auto Glass Safety Council (AGSC). This is probably the most important question, and a “no” will be the only answer you need. Beyond that, be sure to only pay once a service is completed. No credible repair shop will ask for a deposit or any money upfront.
Glass America has accreditation from the AGSC and uses OEM glass or an equivalent. The consultation is always free, and we will only ever replace glass if it is necessary. Your safety is our number one priority. We accept nothing but the best, and our technicians are some of the best in the business, receiving ongoing training to ensure they know about the latest technology in the auto glass industry.
If you have questions about whether your windshield needs replacing or just a repair, feel free to contact us today – Glass America is happy to educate you so you can understand the process.
Not all cracks are created equal. Damage to a windshield is often repairable and does not need an entire replacement. However, understanding the crack and its cause is important when contacting an auto glass technician.
Windshields can crack for several reasons:
· Existing defects – Rarely, but possibly, your windshield could have an existing defect from the manufacturer or installation. This would, understandably, make it much more susceptible to damage.
· Gritty roads – Driving on dirt paths can cause pebbles and gravel to float like debris. When these small pieces of stone hit your windshield repeatedly, they can cause chips that eventually turn into a crack that seemingly comes out of nowhere.
· Burning sun rays – When the heat from the sun directly hits your windshield for long periods, it can cause the molecular bonds in your glass to loosen. Over time, this can cause the windshield to crack. The best way to protect your glass is to shield it with a cover or within a garage.
· Hailstorms – Understandably, ice falling from the sky at high speeds would cause damage to a windshield. In this instance, the idea is to keep your vehicle somewhere covered and wait out the storm.
· Accidents – Even the smallest bump can cause the structural integrity of the windshield to be compromised. If a crack is not immediate, it may be more susceptible to future damage from a seemingly minor situation.
· Crack under pressure – Changes in altitude and air pressure can disrupt the balance of your windshield.
· Fluctuating temperatures – Whether it is winter or summer, when the internal temperature of your vehicle reaches a high opposing number, it can cause the windshield to expand or contract, and ultimately crack.
· Stumbling wreckage – If you park your vehicle under a tree or shrub, the falling leaves, flowers, etc. can scratch your windshield – which can, over time, lead to a crack. In this instance, it is ideal to use a cover to protect the glass.
· Aged windshield – Finally, like many things, auto glass can have a lifespan. Once they have withstood years of fluctuating temperatures, family road trips, fallen shrubbery, etc., it may just crack after the slightest hit. Windshields can become thinner and more fragile with time.
Therefore, you can do everything possible to protect your windshield from obvious damage – but life and the elements could be compromising its structural integrity without you noticing. Of course, not all cracks require an entire replacement. At the first sight of damage, contact a Glass America technician and see if it can be repaired and protected from future damage.
Driving a rental car when traveling or when having repairs done to your own car means learning how to use the rental car’s features rather quickly. And if your rental is larger or smaller than the car you are accustomed to driving, it can take a bit to get used to it. When driving a rental car, we know everyone is always extra careful because nobody wants to be blamed for scratches or other damage they weren’t responsible for but what if your rental car suddenly has a cracked windshield?
We recommend contacting your rental car company and explaining the situation with your windshield. It may take them a moment to look up your rental car information but it’s always best to call them first because even when your car insurance covers you in a rental, the rental company should be advised right away, before getting the windshield fixed to clarify what their procedure is.
If your car rental company instructs you to proceed with the repair or replacement, Glass America will help by supporting you in filing a claim and providing a statement, should this type of documentation be needed. We’re always here for you – contact us today to get the process in motion!
Just because windshield repair kits are typically inexpensive, does not mean they are a good solution or the safest option. You don't want to mess around when it comes to repairing chipped or cracked windshield glass. Having professionals like Glass America repair your vehicle’s glass is always the better choice. Here’s why you should not use DIY windshield repair kits:
- They cause more damage. A windshield chip repair kit is only a band-aid solution. In a worst-case scenario, they can spread the crack in the glass further.
When the outside temperature is too warm or cold, kits cause added friction. As the glass shrinks or expands, it rubs together, resulting in more damage.
- Your warranty may be voided. Did you know that by using a windshield repair kit, your warranty will be voided? It’s likely mentioned in the fine print somewhere. Sometimes it’s best not to take matters into your own hands!
- The crack is too large. Most DIY repair kits are only good for small, bullseye-like cracks and not longer ones. The resin-based formula of these kits isn’t meant to glue glass together. Instead, it acts as a space filler that bonds the center, preventing further stress. Once a windshield crack is larger than a quarter, you can’t patch it safely.
- Safety hazard. Most windshield repair kits are for small pebble-sized damages. When installed in a direct line of sight, it can reduce your visibility. When they dry, they don’t always achieve a crystal-clear finish, solidifying instead and obstructing your view. Not only that, but the vibration of your car could produce enough friction to shatter the glass. This creates a terrifying situation for yourself and the drivers around you.
It’s likely more affordable to replace your windshield. Depending on your vehicle’s make, model, and weight class, replacing windshields can be surprisingly affordable. Many insurance companies will even cover your costs, partially or entirely, based on your policy. They would rather pay to replace damaged auto glass than have it break during use. Don’t waste your money on cheap and ineffective windshield chip repair kits - contact the professionals at Glass America instead.
The length of time it takes to replace a windshield can vary depending on a number of factors such as the make and model of the vehicle, the type of windshield being installed, and the experience and efficiency of the technician doing the work.
Windshield replacement typically takes about an hour for installation. During the installation, your Glass America technician will use a urethane adhesive to seal the windshield into place. The adhesive must be allowed to dry for at least one hour before you can drive away. After an hour the windshield can handle normal driving - so you’re looking at about two hours total from start to finish.

Whether it's mobile service dispatched to your home or business, or an appointment scheduled for one of our drive-in service locations, our experienced customer service reps will schedule the work at your earliest convenience. Yes, it's generally okay if it rains after a windshield replacement, but there are some important considerations to keep in mind:
Curing Time
Most modern adhesives used in windshield replacement are designed to cure rapidly, often within an hour or so. The exact curing time may vary depending on the specific adhesive used and environmental conditions. It's crucial to follow the recommendations provided by the technician who performed the replacement. Rain shortly after replacement might not significantly impact the curing process if the adhesive has had enough time to set properly.
Quality of Replacement
A properly installed windshield should be sealed tightly, preventing water from leaking into the vehicle. If the replacement was done correctly and the adhesive has had sufficient time to cure, rainwater shouldn't pose a problem. If the replacement was not done properly or if there are pre-existing issues with the vehicle's seals, rainwater could potentially leak into the vehicle and cause damage. You never have to question the integrity of your newly installed windshield at Glass America - safety is always our top priority.
Protective Measures
In some cases, technicians may take precautions to protect the new windshield from rain immediately after installation. This might include using a temporary cover or parking the vehicle indoors until the adhesive has fully cured. If such measures were taken, it's essential to follow any instructions provided by the technician.
Check for Leaks
After the windshield replacement, it's a good idea to inspect the vehicle for any signs of water leakage, especially if it rains shortly afterward. Look for water inside the vehicle or any dampness around the edges of the windshield. If you notice any leaks, contact the technician who performed the replacement to have the issue addressed promptly.
Long-Term Effects
While rain shortly after a windshield replacement might not cause immediate problems, it's important to consider the long-term effects of exposure to moisture. Over time, water infiltration could lead to corrosion or other issues, particularly if there are any weaknesses in the seal around the windshield.
There is no federal law in the United States; however, individual states have regulations that govern the condition of vehicle windshields and their compliance with safety standards.
Here are some important things to keep in mind:
- State Laws on Vehicle Safety:
Many states have laws that prohibit driving with a windshield crack that obstructs the driver’s view or impairs the vehicle's safety. If the crack is large, crosses the driver’s line of sight, or affects structural integrity, you may be required to replace it to pass a vehicle inspection. - Inspection Requirements:
States that require periodic vehicle safety inspections often include windshield conditions as part of the inspection process. If the crack violates state inspection standards, you may be required to repair or replace the windshield before renewing your registration. - Traffic Citations:
Driving with a cracked windshield that violates state standards can result in a citation. Law enforcement officers may issue tickets if the crack is deemed unsafe. - Insurance Considerations:
Comprehensive auto insurance policies often cover windshield repair or replacement. In some states, insurance companies are required to provide full coverage with no deductible for windshield replacement.
If you're unsure about the laws in your state, you should check the local Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) for specific regulations.
At Glass America, your safety is our top priority, so we provide the safest windshield repair and replacement service possible. We follow the AGRSS Standard on every installation. The Auto Glass Replacement Safety Standard provides our industry with the best safe windshield repair and replacement guidelines. Our technicians use their advanced techniques and follow their rigid procedures on all installations to offer safety for you and your family. Questions? We’re always here to help.
Did you recently get a windshield replacement? That is great news! Your car is now functioning at full capacity to keep you and your family safe during commutes. That said, you might be wondering how to take care of it. For instance, how long do you have to wait before you can wash the car – and consequently the new windshield? What can you use to do so safely?
Once you have a brand new windshield, you have a clean slate. It is free of chips, cracks, and other damages so you can rest assured that you and your family will be safe in your vehicle. The question now is, how do you best take care of it?
In the first hour, you should keep the following recommendations in mind:
- Do not drive right away
- Clear both the inside and outside areas of the vehicle so that nothing is resting on the glass
- Crack a window open
- Do not remove the retention tape
- Do not put any unnecessary pressure on the new glass
To keep your windshield protected, try to park it in a shaded or sheltered location – like a garage or carport. This will not only keep the car cooler in warmer climates, but this will make it easier to keep the window slightly cracked to prevent off-gassing and the build-up of contaminants. These small steps can help prevent the need for any additional windshield maintenance from unwanted damage.
You should wait 48 hours after a windshield replacement before you wash the exterior of your vehicle. In particular, avoid high-pressure car washes for a minimum of 48 hours. The pressure can actually displace the moldings because it needs that amount of time to set and dry. Once the two days have passed, you can proceed as normal.
That said, there is no harm in knowing how to properly care for the new glass. To clean the interior of the windshield, consider using lint-free microfiber rags with store-bought glass cleaner or a homemade solution. For homemade cleaners, use one-part rubbing alcohol to one-part water, with a capful of white vinegar. For best results, ensure you have cleaned the exterior to ensure you can see how much of the grime is coming from the inside of the glass.
At Glass America, our techs will ensure all of your questions have been answered when they are done with your windshield replacement so that you can properly care for your new windshield. Whether you come to us or we come to you with our convenient and free mobile service
There is no contract for windshield replacement. If you are working with your automobile insurance for your windshield replacement, we will run it through them or your agent can submit the claim through our website.
If you have recently been in an accident or nature has, over time, caused damage to your windshield, it might mean it’s time for a replacement. You can contact your insurance representative to file a claim and they’ll take care of the rest of the paperwork for you. Or, you can contact us directly and we can file a claim with your insurance company on your behalf. We will just need the following information:
· Location (i.e., city and state)
· Name, address, phone number, and email address of the policyholder
· Policy number
· Vehicle number
· Deductible
· Date of damage
· Agency
· Agency phone number
· Insurance company
· Vehicle identification number (VIN)
· Year, make, and model of the vehicle
· Glass needed (i.e., windshield, side glass, etc.)
At no point in this process will a contract be necessary. At Glass America, our priority is scheduling your windshield replacement when it is convenient for you and getting the job done right so you and your passengers can feel safe traveling in your car.

It may be tempting to use a DIY auto glass repair kit to fix the crack or chip in your windshield, but we strongly advise against it. Here are some of the risks associated with DIY windshield repair:
- Toxic Products
Auto glass repair kits come with a clear liquid resin to be injected into the chip or crack and then allowed to harden. This resin can release toxic fumes that irritate your lungs, eyes, and mucous membranes, especially if you perform the glass repair in a closed environment. If this resin comes into direct contact with your skin or eyes, extreme irritation or damage may occur.
- Amateur Repair May Obscure Vision
At Glass America, our repair professionals take steps to ensure that the glass repair dries crystal clear and blends in with the surrounding glass well. When a non-professional repairs a windshield chip or crack using a DIY repair kit, the final appearance of the windshield can vary greatly, leading to unsightly appearing window glass or an obstruction to your vision while driving.
- Windshield Structural Integrity May Be Compromised
Glass America will quickly and efficiently determine if simple repair of the damage will restore full windshield structural integrity or if the damage signals that you need a windshield replacement. When you repair a windshield chip or crack at home with a DIY repair kit, you simply cannot determine if the repair will restore full windshield structural integrity OR if you are repairing a crack so severe that a complete windshield replacement is necessary.
- DIY Kits Require Ideal Weather Conditions
Professional auto glass repair is a multi-step process that requires the use of many tools that most automobile owners do not own. One of these steps is curing, or hardening, the resin used to repair the auto glass with a special UV light. Since UV lights can be expensive, many DIY auto glass repair kits instruct users to allow glass repair resin to cure in direct sunlight for several hours. Weather is unpredictable and cannot be relied on for this meticulous step in the DIY process.
- DIY Repair Cost Not Covered by Auto Insurance Companies
Drivers often purchase DIY auto glass repair kits in an attempt to save money, but doing so can actually result in spending more money! Most auto insurance companies cover the cost of auto glass repairs for drivers who have comprehensive auto insurance policies. Some even waive the insurance deductible for this repair type, because they know that covering the repair in full can help prevent more extensive, and expensive, auto insurance claims in the future. The cost of DIY kits is often greater than the out-of-pocket expense of a professional auto glass repair service for drivers with comprehensive auto insurance.
The short answer is, typically, no. But there are some caveats. If your windshield has some scratches and perhaps a small chip, a simple and quick repair might be all you need. Our Glass America-certified technicians can fill chips to improve visibility and prevent those chips from turning into serious cracks over time. Fixing a small chip now can save you the hassle and cost of replacing the entire windshield later.
On the other hand, if there is a large crack in your windshield, it needs to be replaced as soon as possible. A cracked windshield not only affects visibility, it also compromises the integrity of the glass, which is intended to protect you in case of an accident. Consider these factors when trying to determine whether you need a windshield repair or replacement:
A windshield repair will suffice if a chip is less than 2 centimeters in diameter, and remains on the surface of the glass. This serves more of a cosmetic issue and is also preventive because it keeps a small chip from growing into a larger chip or crack.
A windshield replacement is necessary when the chip is 4 centimeters or greater and there are multiple points of impact, oxidation has occurred, or visibility is hindered.
Glass America performs windshield repair services on every type of vehicle (car, truck, bus, van, year, make, model, etc). When we can't repair the windshield, we offer replacement with OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) quality glass, free mobile service, and a national lifetime warranty on workmanship. Glass America has been America's trusted choice for Windshield repair since 1999.
The time it takes for a new windshield to cure can vary depending on several factors including; the type of adhesive used, environmental conditions, and the specific instructions provided by the installer. However, a general guideline for the curing process is typically around 24 hours. See a detailed breakdown below.
Type of Adhesive
The curing time can depend on the type of adhesive used. Most modern windshields are installed using urethane adhesives, which are designed to cure relatively quickly compared to older types of adhesives. Urethane adhesives typically cure through a chemical reaction with moisture in the air.
Environmental Conditions
Environmental factors such as temperature and humidity can significantly impact the curing time. Warmer temperatures facilitate faster curing, while colder temperatures can slow the process. Similarly, higher humidity levels can speed up curing compared to drier conditions.
Instructions from the Installer
It's essential to follow the specific guidelines provided by the manufacturer of the adhesive or the installer of the windshield. These instructions may include recommendations for curing time based on the specific product used, as well as any additional precautions or considerations. Your certified Glass America technician will provide you with the instructions needed to ensure your safety and the integrity of your windshield.
Initial Setting Time vs. Full Cure
It's important to note that while the adhesive may begin to set relatively quickly, achieving full strength and durability may take longer. The initial setting time may be an hour or two, but to reach its full strength and ensure proper bonding, the windshield may need to remain stationary for up to 24 hours or longer. Glass America only uses adhesives with a 1-Hour Safe Drive Away Time in almost any weather condition - so you can get back on the road quickly and safely.
Safety Precautions
During the curing process, avoiding any activities that could put stress on the windshield or disrupt the bonding process is crucial. This includes avoiding driving the vehicle, washing the car, or subjecting it to extreme temperature changes.
Windshield repairs aim to restore the glass's structural integrity and prevent a chip from spreading into a larger crack, rather than fully eliminating its visibility. The process involves injecting a specialized resin into the chip to fill the damaged area. When cured, the resin bonds with the glass, strengthening the windshield and making the chip less noticeable.
In an ideal scenario, small, shallow chips — such as bullseyes or star-shaped chips — can be filled effectively, resulting in an almost invisible repair. Working with a certified and skilled Glass America technician, the repair can be pretty inconspicuous, especially if the chip is fresh and has not accumulated dirt or moisture. However, this does not guarantee that the chip will disappear 100%.
Several factors impact how noticeable a chip will remain post-repair. Larger chips or those with tiny fractures tend to be more challenging to repair seamlessly and may leave faint marks or slight distortions. Chips in the driver’s line of sight or areas with multiple fractures might still show residual marks, even after a high-quality repair.
While some repair methods and resins aim to make the chip as invisible as possible, the nature of glass and light refraction means there may always be a faint mark or imperfection left behind. This is often why some insurance policies allow full windshield replacements, especially if the damage is within the driver’s line of sight.
Rest assured, a well-executed Glass America auto glass repair will significantly improve the appearance and durability of the windshield, ensuring it remains safe for driving.

Numerous businesses have a fleet of company vehicles. Regardless of your industry – mobile pet grooming, event catering, restaurant delivery, floral delivery, plumber, etc. –branded company vehicles create visibility across the community, and the consumer receiving the goods or service will recognize your vehicle. When there is damage to a vehicle’s glass after a collision, it needs to be remedied as soon as possible.
Because it is a company vehicle, your driver may not know what to do about it and may not even be listed on the insurance policy. Depending on your company’s infrastructure, you or the designated person on your team will need to take the next steps. We have tried to make the process as simple as possible – visit our Commercial Repairs page and fill out the form.

Insurance & Costs
There are few things more unsafe than driving a vehicle with a damaged windshield. Of course, if you do not have car insurance, it may feel like getting it repaired or replaced is not an option for you. Thankfully, that is not the case. Without insurance, you do have to pay out-of-pocket, but it should not set you back too far. Not to mention, avoiding the repair can actually make the damage worse and it could become a life-or-death situation – one that can even result in a traffic ticket in some states.
Replace versus Repair?
You might think the chip is barely noticeable and you can get by without a repair. However, a small chip today can turn into a major crack tomorrow. Keep in mind that any chip or crack in your vehicle’s windshield, regardless of how small, has affected the structural integrity of the glass. This means that no matter its size, your windshield is already not protecting you at its 100% capacity. Anything less than 100% is too unsafe.
Of course, there is a chance your small chip can be filled and does not need a full-fledged replacement. This is often true when a chip is not in the driver’s line of sight or near the edge of the glass and is smaller than a quarter. We recommend, however, that a professional glass technician be the judge of that. A quick consultation will help a technician evaluate the best course of action – and the best way to keep you and your family safe while saving you money.
With or without insurance, windshield repairs and replacements are a must. Understanding this, the cost will never be something completely out of reach.
Windshield Replacement Costs
The cost of a windshield replacement can range from $100 to $1,500 – depending on your specific vehicle and the labor associated. A luxury vehicle, for example, will be on the higher end of the spectrum but the average cost for windshield replacement is actually around $250.
There are some specific factors that can affect the price, like:
- Make/Model of the vehicle
- VIN
- Your location
It is important to understand what is included in your repair/replacement cost. For one, the make and model of your vehicle are important to determine the exact type of glass and shape needed. No two vehicles are exactly alike and Glass America utilizes glass made by the manufacturer to ensure the best possible installation. As you can imagine, the original cost of your vehicle (however low or high) may be reflected in the final cost of the windshield service.
Beyond that, some vehicles within the same brand and even model may have different features. This is where your VIN, or vehicle identification number, also comes into play as it will detail every feature your car has. There is a lot of modern technology in cars today – from collision prevention and blind-spot assistance to backup cameras, these elements are all affected by windshield repair or replacement. The cameras installed to provide these add-ons are often located in the windshield and need to be calibrated. Because a full-functioning windshield is our guarantee, we would never return a vehicle to you unless every feature is working as it should and it is safe for you and your passengers.

If you are an agent or work with an insurance firm, Glass America has made it easy for you to make claims on behalf of your customers via this form.
Let’s imagine a scenario where a policyholder has been in an accident. Their windshield is completely destroyed, and they need a new one as soon as possible. What now? As an agent, it is often your task to file a claim on their behalf. At Glass America, we hope to make filing an auto glass insurance claim as easy as possible. The first step is to ask your policyholder for as many details about the accident as possible, for example:
· Was the damage caused by a collision?
· Where did the collision happen?
· What else might have caused the damage?
· Where is the damage located?
You’ll also need to acquire information such as the location of accident/incident, (city, state), customer’s personal information (i.e., name, address, email address, and policy number), witnesses, police report number if one was filed, etc. You can input all vehicle information (i.e., year, make, model, etc.), deductible, date of accident/incident, etc. Be sure to have all the information about the insurance company you represent on hand so you can input everything into our easy-to-follow online form. For the easiest follow-up, we also ask for your name and email address so we can reach you if additional information is needed. We then work toward scheduling a quick and easy repair or replacement to get your customer back on the road as quickly as possible. Your customer will thank you – as they will have one less thing on their mind.
If you have any questions or run into any issues, you can call our customer service team and they will gladly help by taking down all this information for you.
We do not offer deals for customers paying in cash, but we do offer a $20 discount for any of our in-shop services. Whether you’re looking for auto glass repair or replacement, we have locations nationwide to serve you. If you bring your vehicle into one of our shops for service, we will honor the discount mentioned here. Find a Glass America shop near you or call us and we can help you locate one.
Whether or not to use insurance to replace your windshield depends on several factors, including your insurance policy, the cost of the replacement, and the deductible you would need to pay.
If you have comprehensive insurance coverage, it may cover the cost of replacing your windshield. However, you will typically need to pay a deductible before the insurance coverage kicks in. If the cost of the replacement is lower than your deductible, then it may not be worth filing a claim with your insurance company.
On the other hand, if the cost of the replacement is higher than your deductible, it may make sense to file a claim with your insurance company. Keep in mind that filing a claim may cause your insurance rates to increase, so it's important to weigh the potential long-term cost against the immediate savings. Ultimately, the decision to use your insurance to replace your windshield is a personal one, and it's important to carefully consider all the factors before making a choice.
Glass America is happy to file your insurance claim for you! We understand the insurance billing process and we have an outstanding reputation with insurance companies and agents throughout the country. We handle all the insurance payment and reimbursement paperwork and make sure your claim is processed properly and expeditiously.
Even if your insurance company refers you to a specific auto glass company, you have the right to choose the best company for you. We have locations throughout the country, use the highest quality materials and offer a lifetime workmanship warranty. Our experience takes the guesswork out of the insurance claims process.

If you have watched the news recently, you have likely seen several reports on both the increased rate of scams occurring to millions of Americans, as well as global supply chain issues. Unfortunately, the auto glass industry has been affected by both of these crises. The good news is, however, that there are ways to protect yourself from scammers in 2022. The key is knowing what questions to ask.
You might be wondering how you can be scammed in the auto glass industry. Well, for one, if someone is offering to repair or replace your windshield for free, it is certainly a scam. This is particularly prevalent in states like Arizona and Florida, where insurance companies do not have deductibles for windshield damage. However, scams can be less obvious.
When an auto glass repair comes with additional incentives, it can mean the repair shop is not credible. You should not be offered movie tickets, free car washes, or gift cards with your appointments. In these specific instances, the shop is trying to pocket some of the money from your insurance company. Similarly, a repair shop that wants to pocket insurance money may prescribe a windshield replacement for an undamaged windshield or one that needs a minor repair. This is, without question, fraud.
The key to avoiding sneaky repair shops is to ask to see all accreditation. A properly staffed and licensed auto glass repair shop will have accreditation from the Auto Glass Safety Council. This shop will not use refurbished glass or repair undamaged glass. They will be sure to work with your vehicle’s manufacturer and only use the glass intended for the specific make and model of your vehicle (i.e., OEM or similar).
Understanding what you need is key to preventing a scam. Thankfully, Glass America is a recognized leader in the auto glass industry and offers excellent customer service. Get a quote online anytime or call us with any questions!

Check Your Policy: Review your insurance policy documents, especially the section on comprehensive coverage. Windshield repairs or replacements are typically covered under comprehensive coverage, not liability or collision insurance.
Look for Glass Coverage: Some insurance companies offer full glass coverage as an add-on. This may cover repairing or replacing your windshield without a deductible.
Deductible Amount: If your policy covers windshield repair, you may still be required to pay a deductible. Some companies waive the deductible for minor repairs (like chip repairs), while others may charge the full deductible for a total replacement.
Call Your Insurance Provider: Contact your insurance company directly and ask about your windshield repair or replacement coverage. They can clarify whether you’re covered and explain conditions, such as deductible amounts or preferred repair shops like Glass Americ. Pro Tip: Even if your insurance company refers you to a specific auto glass company, you can choose the best company for your needs. Glass America has locations throughout the country, with mobile service available. It uses the highest-quality materials and offers a lifetime workmanship warranty.
State Laws: Some states require insurance companies to offer zero-deductible windshield repair or replacement. If you live in Florida, South Carolina, or Kentucky, your insurance may be required to cover it fully.
Mobile Repair Services: Some insurance policies also offer free mobile repair services, where a technician comes to your location to fix or replace the windshield, saving you a trip to the repair shop. Glass America is proud to offer free and convenient mobile repair services!

Safety, Certifications & Quality
Glass America is one of the leading companies for auto glass replacement and repair. In order to hold this kind of ranking and trust, we uphold the highest standards of quality, professionalism, and certification possible. One way that this is accomplished is by ensuring our technicians are certified by the Auto Glass Safety Council (AGSC).
When you purchase a brand new vehicle, you expect it to only have the best of the best quality parts. That means, should there ever be a time when something needs to be replaced, you should expect nothing but something of equal or greater value in its place. The same goes for auto glass. At the time of a replacement, you want to ensure only the best quality glass in the business is used. However, what is considered “quality”?
Quality does not always translate, depending on who you ask. That is why it is important to have an organization or governing body that determines the guidelines and rules to establish that definition. In the world of auto glass, that is the Auto Glass Safety Council (AGSC), the Coalition for Auto Glass Safety & Public Awareness (CASPA), and Independent Glass Association (IGA).
A company like Glass America leaves defining quality to the experts and then follows all of the guidelines. At the time of replacement, our team goes directly to the glass manufacturers or contacts a vendor with the necessary approvals – this is Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) or Original Equipment Equivalent (OEE) auto glass. That’s right, OEM, as the name suggests, is identical to your original windshield while OEE is glass that is made to the same standards.
At the time of booking your appointment, you can choose your preference. For your safety, the structural integrity of your vehicle, and preventing future damage – never settle for something of inferior quality because of a seemingly “better deal.” If you have any questions about Glass America and the quality of the glass we use, do not hesitate to give us a call at any time!

When looking for an auto glass repair and replacement service you can trust, look no further than Glass America. Our shops are licensed and insured because Quality Means Safety, and Safety Means Everything.
In 1970 the United States government formed the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The NHTSA created the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards, which included several automotive glass regulations:
- Standards for the transparency of auto glass.
- Standards for the strength of auto glass-including the requirement that the glass be capable of keeping occupants inside the vehicle during accidents.
- Standard practices and procedures for mounting a windshield in such a way that a certain level of strength is retained even during an accident.
Today, several auto glass safety and training organizations exist to help ensure the proper and safe installation of auto glass in all vehicles. Glass America is proud to partner with the Independent Glass Association (IGA) for additional training, certification, and recent industry updates in auto glass safety and technology.
Another organization, the Auto Glass Safety Council, brought together windshield manufacturers, car makers, adhesive companies, and auto glass retailers to focus on consumer safety and technology. In 1999, they formed the Auto Glass Replacement Safety Standard (AGRSS). Glass America is proud to be AGRSS certified.

However, as restrictions may ease because cases decrease, we still want to participate in keeping those numbers low. Your safety is our priority so we will continue to do our part.
You can review updated precautions on our website anytime and we have listed them here for your convenience.

To enter the industry, you do not need to have any prior knowledge. If you enjoy working with your hands, are detail-oriented, and are a hard worker, this is the right place for you. Auto glass training starts from the basics, all the way to advanced level craftsmanship. However, even those who have been replacing and repairing auto glass for decades need to constantly get back into the classroom to learn the latest technology.
Auto Glass Technicians are expected to be knowledgeable in the removal, replacement, and repair of auto glass as well as windshield calibration. However, one does not simply wake up one morning completely aware of the ins and outs of glass, and every single vehicle on the market. Auto Glass Technicians, as you can imagine, have to continuously train to learn the latest information for the industry.
No two vehicles on the road are alike. Therefore, an auto glass technician needs hands-on training to be prepared to do the job on their own. During training, trainees will work with real vehicles and real issues. From small chip repairs to full removals and replacements, Auto Glass Technicians in training will do it all until it becomes nearly second nature. The key is in the practice and first-hand experience.
In addition, cars today come with a plethora of new features. From collision prevention to rear cameras, they are built for convenience and safety and much of this lives on the windshield. Therefore, replacement and repairs now also come with a need for understanding windshield calibration.
At Glass America, we have found that training is never-ending for our team because we want to provide the best possible workmanship and customer service. We also know the job is incredibly rewarding. If you are considering a career as an Auto Glass Technician, check out our open positions.
Yes! Glass America provides only the best possible service which is guaranteed to last. At Glass America, we stand behind our work! All of our technicians are certified and all our auto glass repairs and replacements meet or exceed the Automotive Glass Replacement Safety Standard (AGRSS). proper workmanship for auto glass repairs and replacements so that safety is not compromised.

Fixing a small chip now can save you the hassle and cost of replacing the entire windshield later. Small chips can lead to large cracks requiring complete windshield replacement - nobody wants that! Here’s why you should never ignore a chip in your auto glass:
· Chips can quickly become cracks. Small damage can spread quickly due to increased pressure on the windshield. Pressure can come from something as minor as going through a car wash, changes in temperature, or slamming the car door.
· Chips negatively affect a vehicle’s structural integrity. A cracked windshield compromises the structural integrity of the windshield, which, in turn, contributes to the structural strength of a vehicle. In an accident, the windshield supports the roof, prevents passengers from being thrown from the vehicle, and helps airbags
deploy properly. If you end up in a collision with a damaged windshield, it will shatter easier and won’t provide the same structural support.
· Fixing windshield chips are inexpensive and quick. Our windshield repairs are fast and affordable. There’s no reason to put it off and risk having to pay more for an entire windshield replacement.
· You may be cited for a traffic violation. Driving with a chipped windshield is illegal and may result in a ticket. If there is a chip larger than one inch on the windshield, you could be cited.
· Debris can complicate repairs. If a windshield chip isn’t repaired right away, dirt can penetrate the chip and cause more problems. If you wait too long to fix the chip, the dirt inside the glass can cause the resin to not hold as effectively as it should. If the resin doesn’t hold, the chip can begin to crack, forcing an entire windshield replacement.
The short answer is - yes! But rest assured, Glass America only uses the best quality auto glass on the market. Whether it’s Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) glass or an aftermarket brand, we only present the best auto glass options to our customers, as your safety, the structural integrity of your vehicle, and preventing future damage are top priorities for us.
If you need to repair or replace your vehicle’s windshield, it’s always best to use OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) glass. OEM, as the name suggests, is identical to your original windshield. However, there are many aftermarket brands that are just as good quality as OEM glass. It really boils down to which aftermarket manufacturer is being used - and we only work with the most trusted manufacturers available.
If OEM glass is not available, the aftermarket manufacturers that we use are the next best thing for you and your vehicle.
Glass Technology & Vehicle Compatibility
Are you concerned your vehicle might be too “old” for a Glass America auto glass repair or replacement? Fixing up vintage cars or a vehicle over 20 years old can be extremely difficult because it can be challenging to locate the right parts. Thankfully
Vehicle technology is constantly evolving and improving at astonishing rates. As a consumer, you simply blink and the cars on the road have incredible new safety features and capabilities – like augmented reality and driverless cars. However, some of the most fascinating advancements come in the form of windshield development and safety.
What is windscreen technology? That is a great question. Windscreen technology has everything to do with the latest technological advancements in the auto glass industry. To start, we have to address: gorilla glass, and how it is changing the game. Gorilla glass is known for its smartphone use – making our phone screens thinner, yet stronger and essentially unscratchable and breakable. Can you imagine this kind of technology on a windshield? Well, you do not have to. It is already here. Gorilla glass is developed by dipping the windscreen in molten salt, which causes a chemical reaction that makes the glass more durable – while remaining lightweight. This increased durability makes the glass significantly less fragile.
In addition, augmented reality is not just for high-tech events and video games. Actually, AR allows for superimposing external objects onto the screen for easy maneuvering. This is ideal for navigation – like directions, but also highlighting road names, speed limits, traffic congestion warnings, etc. The possibilities are endless, and are going to make driving more efficient and certainly safer by removing the need to ever take your eyes off the road.
Finally, car manufacturers are considering the concept of wiperless windshields by studying the technology found on fighter jets. By using a sonic sound to repel rain, windshield wipers would become obsolete and visibility would improve dramatically during particularly heavy downpours.
The one thing windscreen improvements have in common is finding ways to make use of the massive window in front of the driver. The objective is to make driving a smoother and safer experience for all parties.
In North America, the large piece of glass at the front of a vehicle (aircraft, car, bus, motorbike, truck, train, boat, or streetcar) that provides visibility and protection from the elements is called a windshield. Meanwhile, the same part of a vehicle is called a “windscreen” in Britain. That’s right, this same component is called something different across the pond. The truth is, there is no actual difference.
According to Merriam-Webster Dictionary, a windscreen is a screen that protects against the wind. In the beginning, windscreens (or windshields) were made of ordinary window glass and were primarily used to protect the driver and vehicle’s passengers from the wind and flying debris (i.e., dust, insects, rocks, etc.). Over time, additional safety features were added such as a UV coating to protect the vehicle’s passengers from the sun, and the glass transitioned to laminated safety glass.
Therefore, if you find yourself needing a windshield repair or replacement in the UK, be sure to search for the best windscreen technicians in the area. Interestingly, in the UK, if the windscreen is cracked, you need to repair or replace it immediately. It is considered a motoring offense to drive with a cracked windscreen because the vehicle is now compromised and this puts the passengers in danger. The Highway Code states that drivers should have a full, clear view of the road ahead. Therefore, windscreen glass must always be maintained in good condition – here and in the UK.
Whether you call it a windscreen or windshield, if your vehicle’s auto glass needs repairs or replacements, you can always count on the Best in Auto Glass – Glass America – to get the job done right. Get an online quote today!
Yes, a windshield can crack or shatter from intense heat, but it typically requires extremely high temperatures or a combination of factors to cause this. Here are some ways in which intense heat can damage a windshield:
Sunlight and Magnification: On a hot, sunny day, the sunlight can be concentrated through the windshield if it passes through the glass at a certain angle. This can create a hotspot on the dashboard, and if there are objects like glass bottles or other items that can focus the sunlight's energy, it may lead to a crack.
Rapid Temperature Change: Sudden and extreme temperature changes can stress the glass and cause it to crack. For example, pouring very cold water on a hot windshield or exposing it to a sudden blast of hot air from a heater can lead to thermal stress and cracking.
External Fires: If a vehicle is parked close to a source of intense heat or a fire, such as a building or a wildfire, the extreme heat can cause the windshield to crack or shatter. This is especially true if the glass has any existing weaknesses or defects.
Poor Quality Glass: Low-quality or damaged windshields are more susceptible to cracking or shattering under extreme heat. It's essential to have high-quality, undamaged glass installed in your vehicle. Glass America uses only the highest quality adhesives, epoxies, and replacement glass. Our OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) quality glass provides the exact replacement windshield for the safest perfect fit.
To prevent windshield damage from intense heat, follow these tips:
- Park your vehicle in a shaded area.
- Use sunshades to block direct sunlight.
- Avoid exposing the windshield to sudden temperature changes.
- Ensure that your windshield is in good condition and free of defects or cracks, as pre-existing weaknesses can make it more susceptible to damage.
The thickness of your windshield’s glass can vary based on the make and model of your vehicle. However, the standard thickness generally falls between 4.76mm (0.1875 inches) to 6.35mm (0.25 inches). Windshield glass is not uniform in thickness; it is designed with multiple layers for safety and durability.
- Outer Layer: This layer is the one exposed to the outside environment and potential hazards. It is usually thinner to minimize the risk of shattering upon impact. It's typically around 2.1mm to 2.5mm (0.0825 to 0.0984 inches) thick.
- Inner Layer(s): The inner layers of the windshield add strength and prevent the glass from shattering upon impact. These layers are thicker than the outer layer and usually account for the bulk of the glass thickness, ranging from 2.1mm to 4.0mm (0.0825 to 0.1575 inches).
Windshields are typically made of laminated safety glass. This type of glass consists of multiple layers: two sheets of glass with a thin layer of polyvinyl butyral (PVB) sandwiched in between. This design enhances the structural integrity of the windshield, making it less likely to shatter upon impact. Even if the glass breaks, the PVB layer holds the fragments together, reducing the risk of injuries from flying glass shards.
The thickness of the windshield glass is a crucial factor in maintaining the structural integrity of a vehicle and ensuring the safety of its occupants in the event of a collision or impact. The specific thicknesses can vary depending on the manufacturer's design and safety standards, but the laminated structure remains a consistent feature in modern windshields.

Auto glass encapsulation is a process to obtain a frame around the glass by injecting a polymer on its border through a framing mold. It is also referred to as the glass assembly part because it serves as a solution for car fittings and aesthetics. The rim is formed with the material as it cools down and encapsulates the glass.
In other words, rubber or molten plastic is injected around the outside of the glass so that it melds the part to the glass’s surface. This creates an unbreakable border around the glass.
Every car shape and model has a different windshield shape. Therefore, no two glass replacements will be identical. This is the reason why detailed questions are asked when it is time for a windshield replacement. An alloy die-casting mold must be developed for the specific car design and shape. A double component of polyurethane (PU) or PVC-TPE/EPDM material is placed under immense pressure within the mold, creating the PU rim. This rim is formed as the materials cool down. As mentioned, once encapsulated the material cannot be removed.
This is a much safer and error-proof method of windshield manufacturing and can also be used for side windows and rear windows because it will not budge. Meanwhile
The words replacement and repair mean very different things – and they probably mean very different dollar signs. Whether or not damage to your windshield needs a replacement or repair is completely dependent on what the damage is, where it is, and how it can be remedied. However, one fact remains across the board – do not wait too long to get either.
When there is damage to a windshield, it completely affects the structural integrity of the glass, and therefore, does not meet the necessary safety requirements to keep you and your passengers from harm’s way, should you get into an accident. Not to mention, a small chip that can easily be repaired can turn into a crack that calls for a replacement.
How can you tell whether or not you need a replacement versus a repair?
A replacement is required if: 1) the glass is tempered and not laminated, 2) the crack is longer than a dollar bill, 3) the crack (or chip) is deep, 4) the crack (or chip) extends beyond the edge of the windshield. It is important to have an expert take a close look, to ensure you are not putting a bandaid on a more dire situation.
However, in the case the chip is small, in the center and not deep – a glass technician can inject resin in the area to fill it and prevent it from spreading.
Regardless, it is important to call a glass technician immediately upon sight of any windshield damage. Time is of the essence to ensure any damage does not worsen with time. In fact, temperature changes from day to night, moisture in the air, and even a rocky road or large pothole can make any damage significantly worse in the matter of seconds.
If you need your windshield inspected by the best, contact your local Glass America to see what kind of repair or replacement you might need. We take care of the rest!
Advanced safety systems are features that help you, the driver, stay extra safe while driving or parking your car. They are technological advancements that minimize human error. Nowadays, many vehicles come equipped with some of these features, while others can be purchased as add-ons.
Take a look at the advanced safety systems we feel are worth the added expense:
· Rear-View or Back-Up Camera
What it does: Displays the view from behind your car as you’re backing up to help avoid hitting pedestrians or other vehicles. Cost: Camera prices start at around $30; full systems such as Auto Vox start at $150; professional installation is recommended.
· Blind-Spot Detection
What it does: Keeps an eye out for obstacles in your blind spots and warns you with an alert (usually a light on your driver and passenger-side mirrors) if someone is in your blind spot. Some blind-spot monitors will sound an alarm or cause a vibration in the steering wheel.
Cost: $300-500; professional installation is recommended.
· Collision Avoidance/Warning System
What it does: Alerts drivers to potential crashes. Sensors take into account your vehicle's speed and the distance of other vehicles or obstacles and then sound an alarm if they sense an impending collision. These sensors are especially useful for avoiding crashes when changing lanes if someone is in your blind spot. Collision Avoidance Systems can also snap a driver back to attention if their attention drifts during a long drive.
Cost: $65 - $850+, depending on how sophisticated your system is.
If your car doesn’t come equipped with these systems, we recommend spending the extra money to invest in your safety.
Your vehicle’s windshield is typically made of laminated safety glass. It's a specialized type of glass composed of two layers of glass with a layer of polyvinyl butyral (PVB) sandwiched in between. This design enhances safety, visibility, and structural integrity by preventing the glass from shattering into sharp pieces upon impact. The key advantage of laminated safety glass is its ability to hold together in the event of a collision.
The inner layer of PVB is a bonding agent, holding the glass layers together. Even if the windshield breaks, the glass fragments adhere to the PVB layer, reducing the risk of injury from flying glass shards. This construction also contributes to the vehicle's structural integrity, providing support to the roof in the event of a rollover.
Modern windshields often incorporate other materials for enhanced durability and performance. These may include:
- Acoustic Interlayers: Some windshields have acoustic interlayers made of sound-dampening materials like vinyl or acoustic PVB. These reduce noise from outside the vehicle, providing a quieter ride.
- Infrared-Reflective Coatings: Special coatings can be applied to windshields to reduce the amount of infrared radiation and heat entering the vehicle, improving comfort and energy efficiency.
- Ultraviolet (UV) Protection: Many windshields are treated to block harmful UV rays, protecting the vehicle's interior and its occupants from sun damage.
Maintaining a windshield is crucial for both safety and visibility. Regular cleaning using a non-abrasive glass cleaner helps remove dirt, grime, and debris that can impair visibility. Small chips or cracks should be addressed promptly to prevent them from spreading and compromising the structural integrity of the windshield.
Your windshield is a multi-layered, purpose-built shield that combines various materials to ensure safety, visibility, and durability. From laminated safety glass to specialized coatings, every component serves a crucial function in making your journey safer and more comfortable. Glass America only uses the highest quality adhesives, epoxies, and replacement glass to ensure the safest, perfect fit every time!
Maintenance & Care
Winter is a cold season, yes, but for some, it is a season of sleet, snow, freezing rain. This means your car is constantly under harsh conditions, and preventing damage means knowing how to maintain and manage the issues. In the event of an icy windshield, what is the best way to remove that pesky layer of frozen water?
At the risk of sounding trite, the best way to remove ice from a windshield is to prevent it from getting there. That’s right, a windshield cover is your best friend in any season – but particularly in the winter. You do not have to remove something that was never there to begin with. If you do not have a garage or other form of sheltered parking, a windshield cover will protect your glass from the elements.
Sometimes heavy snowfall can make removing a windshield cover difficult. In this instance, remove as much as you can until there is a thin, icy layer. Keep in mind that it does not need to even snow or rain for a windshield to get icy. Morning dew and the right low temperature can cause a windshield to freeze. To further prevent harm, soak a cloth
windshield cover in a solution of one tablespoon salt to one quart of water. If you do not have a cover, spray a solution of three parts vinegar to one part water onto the windshield directly.
Once at this point, the methods of removal are the same – whether it is snow or only ice. You can follow these easy steps:
· Start the engine
· Set the heater to defrost
· Adjust the airflow to recirculate
· Move the temperature control to full heat
As the ice begins to melt, you can use a plastic scraper to remove the ice. The key here is to be gentle and use your judgment. You will need to avoid using anything made of metal, which can scratch the glass and/or damage the wiper blades. Finally, avoid hot water, as it can crack the glass and cause the most damage from thermal shock.
If your windshield suffers damage as you try to remove ice, call Glass America, The Best in Auto Glass, to schedule an appointment with our experienced auto glass technicians.
There are countless causes why annoying water spots form on your auto glass - rain, snow, lawn sprinklers, and leaking roof gutters are all possible culprits. Water spots form when mineral-laden water is left to dry rather than being wiped off the glass. As the water evaporates, minerals are left behind. So, what are the best ways to remove water spots from your auto glass? Check out these helpful tips:
· Vinegar and water. Because the minerals in hard water are alkaline in nature, the acid in vinegar can help to neutralize them. Spray the glass with a solution of equal parts water and white distilled vinegar. Thoroughly saturate the areas with the most buildup. Allow the solution to sit for a couple of minutes, re-spraying the glass as it dries. Wet a small, rough towel with the vinegar and water solution, and scrub the glass with the towel. Dry the window with a soft cloth or paper towel, and if you still see water spots left behind, repeat the process.
· Lemon. Fresh lemon juice works better than the bottled kind. You can squeeze the juice from the lemon into a spray bottle or apply it with a towel. You can even rub the lemon directly on the glass! Wipe up the lemon juice left behind with a soft cloth or paper towel. Finish with a spray of glass cleaner and wipe it away with newspaper for a streak-free shine.
· Baking soda and water. Create a paste made with baking soda and a small amount of water. Apply the paste to a cloth and scrub the window vigorously to allow the abrasive granules of baking soda to remove the hard water spots. Thoroughly rinse the glass with water, and then use glass cleaner and a newspaper to remove all residue and streaks from the window.
· Store-bought cleaning products. Commercial cleaners are available with the specific purpose of removing water spots. You can find them at your local hardware store.
The length of time you should leave tape on after a windshield replacement can vary depending on the instructions provided by the auto glass technician, as well as the type of adhesive used. In general, most technicians will recommend leaving the tape on for at least 24-48 hours after the replacement. Here is the typical timeline:
Initial Holding Period: After a windshield replacement, there is an initial holding or curing period during which it's crucial to keep the windshield in place to ensure the adhesive sets properly. During this time, the tape or molding used to hold the windshield in place should not be removed. Glass America ONLY uses adhesives with a 1-Hour Safe Drive Away Time in almost any weather condition - so you can get back on the road quickly and safely.
Full Curing Time: While the initial holding period is important, the adhesive used to bond the windshield to the vehicle usually continues to cure and strengthen over time. It's advisable to leave the tape in place for at least 24 hours, but it's best to follow the specific recommendations of the auto glass technician.
Weather Considerations: Keep in mind that weather conditions can affect curing times. In colder temperatures, curing may take longer, so it might be necessary to leave the tape in place for an extended period.
Avoid Disturbing the Seal: It's crucial not to disturb or apply excessive force to the windshield during the curing period. Avoid driving the vehicle or subjecting it to any significant stress until you are sure the adhesive has fully cured.
Clean Removal: When you decide to remove the tape, follow the technician's instructions carefully to avoid damaging the newly replaced windshield or the vehicle's finish.
Your Glass America technician will always provide you with information tailored to your particular situation, including the type of adhesive used and any unique considerations. Questions? We’re here for you.
Protecting your engine from freezing is crucial, especially during cold weather. Here are some tips to help prevent your engine from freezing:
- Use Antifreeze/Coolant: Make sure your engine's cooling system has the correct mixture of antifreeze and water. The recommended ratio is typically 50:50. Antifreeze not only prevents freezing but also helps in preventing the engine from overheating.
- Check the Coolant Level: Regularly check the coolant level in the radiator and the overflow reservoir. Ensure that it is at the recommended level.
- Inspect Hoses and Belts: Check the hoses and belts for any signs of wear or damage. Replace them if necessary, as they play a crucial role in the proper functioning of the cooling system.
- Check the Radiator Cap: Inspect the radiator cap for any damage and ensure it is sealing properly. The radiator cap helps maintain the right pressure in the cooling system.
- Park in a Garage: If possible, park your vehicle in a garage to shield it from extreme cold temperatures. This can provide additional protection against freezing.
- Use a Block Heater: Consider using a block heater, especially if you live in extremely cold climates. A block heater warms the engine and helps it start more easily in cold weather.
- Install an Engine Heater Blanket: Similar to a block heater, an engine heater blanket wraps around the engine and helps keep it warm. It can be particularly useful in very cold conditions.
- Allow the Engine to Warm Up: Before driving in cold weather, allow your engine to warm up for a few minutes. This gives the oil and other fluids a chance to reach optimal operating temperatures.
- Check the Battery: Cold weather can affect battery performance. Ensure your battery is in good condition, and consider replacing it if it's old or showing signs of weakness.
- Keep Fuel Tank Full: A full tank of fuel can help prevent moisture from forming in the fuel lines, reducing the risk of fuel line freezing.
- Use a Windshield Washer Fluid with Antifreeze: Make sure the windshield washer fluid you use contains antifreeze. This not only helps in cleaning your windshield but also prevents the fluid from freezing.
Remember to follow your vehicle's manufacturer recommendations and guidelines for cold weather maintenance. If you're unsure or need assistance, consult with a qualified mechanic or your vehicle's service manual.
Despite its name, the lovebug is not loveable at all. Although they do not bite or sting humans, they can present some real hazards to your car. Their name comes from the fact that they are usually paired together with a “mate.” They’ll attach their bodies to their mate and fly in tandem together. Many lovebugs swarm near roadways and, as a result, cars that drive through clouds of these insects end up with decreased visibility, which can result in potential car accidents.
In addition to hindering visibility while driving, lovebugs also:
· Can damage your car’s engine
· Can damage your car’s paint
· Can invade areas with excessive moisture (basements, attics, and storage rooms, we’re looking at you)
· Can disturb your plants
Now that you know how pesky these creatures can be, how do you get rid of them when they land on your windshield? Here are some tips:
· Wash them off painted car surfaces and windshields ASAP. Try to resist the temptation to blast them with washer fluid and a swipe of wipers. It'll create a slurry of bug parts (no thank you.) Instead, use a high-pressure washer, like a hose with an adjustable nozzle, to blow bug remains off your vehicle.
· Wet a dryer sheet and use it to wipe off the bugs. Let the water soak in, and reapply a couple of times if needed. The good news is the dryer sheet does not scratch and pulls most bugs off easily. Because it may leave a residue, rinse with soap and water.
· Fill a bucket with hot water and soap. Using a sponge or cleaning rag, soak the affected area. Let sit for a few minutes, and repeat. The hot water will loosen the bugs, and they can now be easily removed.
· Some effective commercial cleaning products are Super Clean, Simple Green, Spray 'n Wash, and Clay Magic.
It’s recommended that you change your windshield wiper blades every six months or so. This will ensure optimal visibility as you drive and prevent scratches from worn-out blades on your windshield.
Here’s a step-by-step guide to removing your wipers, and how to install new ones:
Measure Your Wipers: Windshield wipers come in several sizes; use the wrong ones, and they either won’t fit your vehicle or won’t work correctly. To determine the correct size, reference the current blade length, typically measured in inches, or look in your owner’s manual.
Take off Windshield Wipers: Gently lift the arm away from the windshield, then press the small tab under the wiper where it meets the arm. The wiper blade should then slide right off the arm when you pull downward.
Attach the New Blade: First confirm that the new blade uses the same hooks as the old, then attach it to the arm. You should hear a clicking sound as the new blade locks in place. Gently lower the arm back to the windshield with the new blade before repeating the process on the other one.
Test Them Out: Don’t wait until a downpour to see if you installed the new blades correctly. Turn the wipers on and off to make sure they work effectively and don’t come loose. This is also a good time to check your windshield washer fluid level and add more to your vehicle if it needs it.
Windshield wipers are one of the least expensive parts of your car, so there’s no reason to put off changing them every six months.
The specific month to winterize your car can vary depending on your location and the climate of the region. In general, we advise you to start preparing your car for winter before the colder weather sets in and potentially brings snow, ice, and other winter driving challenges.
In colder climates where winter conditions start early, such as in northern regions, it's a good idea to start the winterization process in the fall, typically around late September or early October. This allows you to address issues like checking and changing your antifreeze, ensuring your tires are suitable for winter conditions, inspecting your battery, and ensuring your heating system is working properly.
It’s crucial to repair any auto glass cracks before the weather gets colder, as glass expands and contracts in extreme temperatures. When a windshield is compromised with a small crack, it’s very likely that condensation, water, or other moisture will fill the crack and freeze, causing the crack to expand. The same effect can occur by blasting the heat from the defroster. The sudden temperature change causes the glass that has contracted to expand rapidly, potentially causing it to grow from a small crack to a massive break across the entire windshield. Make sure to get any cracks repaired now, to avoid huge breaks in the future!
If you live in a milder climate where winter is less severe, you might not need to winterize your car as extensively, but it's still a good idea to perform some basic maintenance checks before the colder months. Regardless of your location, it's always a good practice to consult your vehicle's owner's manual for specific recommendations and guidelines regarding winterizing your car.
It's best to avoid washing your car immediately after an auto glass repair. Our expert Glass America technicians recommend waiting at least 24 to 48 hours before getting a car wash to ensure the adhesive has had time to set correctly.
When windshields or auto glass are repaired or replaced, an adhesive is used to bond the glass securely to the vehicle. Water, high pressure, or chemicals from a car wash could disturb the adhesive before it has fully cured, leading to potential issues like leaks or improper bonding.
Avoid high-pressure or automated car wash for the first 48 hours. High-pressure water or brushes can disrupt the setting adhesive. While hand washing exerts less pressure than an automated wash, waiting the recommended time is still advisable to prevent any disturbance to the adhesive. Even minor pressure can interfere with the curing process.
If you need to clean your windshield within the first 24 to 48 hours, gently wipe it down with a soft, damp cloth without applying too much pressure. Avoid the edges of the glass where the adhesive is most vulnerable.

We depend on windshield wipers to help us navigate the roads during rainy weather. They also come in handy to clean gunk off of our windshields. So, who invented the trusty windshield wiper?
In 1902, Mary Anderson was visiting New York City from Alabama. Riding a streetcar while it was snowing made her wonder - What if there were some sort of blade that could wipe off the windshield without making the driver get out of the streetcar?
Anderson went back to Birmingham, made a sketch of her device, and wrote up a description of it. Then she applied for a patent. The patent application describes how the wiper was to be operated by a handle inside the vestibule of the motor car and be easily removable.
The application was filed on June 18, 1903. On November 10, 1903, the United States Patent Office awarded Anderson patent number 743,801 for her Window Cleaning Device. Although she didn't get any money for her invention, at least she finally got some credit. In 2011 she was inducted into the Inventors Hall of Fame.
A VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) is a unique identifying code given to a vehicle when it’s manufactured. Your car’s VIN provides a wealth of information from engine type to any accidents to product recalls. Police can even use your car’s VIN to determine if it was involved in a theft or other crime. It’s essentially your vehicle’s entire history!
So, where can you locate this crucial number when you need it? While there isn't one standard spot to locate your VIN, here are some of the most common places you’ll find it:
· Driver's side interior dashboard (you can read the number by looking through the windshield on the driver’s side of the vehicle)
· Driver's side door jamb (open the door and look underneath where the side-view mirror would be located if the door was shut)
· Under the hood (front of the engine block)
· The front end of the frame (near the container that holds windshield washer fluid)
· Rear wheel well (directly above the tire)
· Underneath the spare tire
· Vehicle registration
· Title documents
The numbers and letters that make up the 17-digit sequence can be confusing to decipher. Let's break the numbers down (don’t worry, there won’t be a quiz):
· World Manufacturer Identifier: The first three digits define the vehicle's country of origin, manufacturer, region where it was produced, and its type or manufacturing division.
· Vehicle Description: The next six digits describe the car's model, body, restraint system, transmission, engine, and fraud detector.
· Vehicle Identifier: The last eight digits indicate the car's year, manufacturing plant, and the unique serial number assigned while it's on the assembly line.
